PGA Professional Championship a Great Opportunity for Sunriver

Sunriver Is Honored to Join a Select List of Four-Time Ppc Hosts

When the PGA of America announced that Crosswater Club and the Meadows Course would be the host the 2017 PGA Professional Championship, Sunriver Resort became a member of an exceedingly rare group. Already the host of the PPC in 2001, 2007, and 2013, Sunriver became one of the few chosen by the PGA to host the PPC four times or more, joining a list that includes some of the best-known names in American golf. Names such as Pinehurst and PGA West.

The selection, which came in 2015, was an honor. It was also indicative of the strong relationship Sunriver Resort has built with the PGA of America over the years, the elite quality of Crosswater and Meadows, and all the hard work Sunriver and its staff has put in over the years.

“The PGA of America takes pride in its relationship with Sunriver Resort, one of the many wonderful venues nationwide to host this National Championship,” Derek Sprague, who was then the President of the PGA of America, said when the tournament site was announced. “Sunriver’s marvelous Crosswater Club and Meadows Course set the bar high in accommodating our players and their families. The PGA has enjoyed three memorable National Championships at Sunriver, and we anticipate our 50th Championship in 2017 will deliver another great chapter in PGA member history.”

Sunriver Resort has been at it again in preparation for the 2017 PPC, but finally the hard work is almost complete. The 50th PGA Professional Championship will tee off on Sunday, June 18, and be finish at Crosswater on Wednesday, June 21. The 72-hole tournament will bring together 312 of the nation's top club professionals for a chance to qualify for the 2017 PGA Championship. Each round of the tournament will be televised live on the Golf Channel.

For Sunriver, the PPC and Golf Channel coverage offers yet another opportunity for the resort to show itself off to the world. And Sunriver has certainly taken the opportunity to heart.

In fact, much has been improved at Sunriver Resort since the last time the PGA of America visited Central Oregon, especially at Meadows. In 2015, Sunriver completed a $450,000 project to renovate all 18 Meadows greens. The renovation completed a program at the Resort to replace all 54 greens at its three championship golf courses with a particularly hearty strain of bentgrass, called T-1. And in 2016, Sunriver finished a $425,000 project to renovate the bunkers at Meadows, giving Meadows an entirely different look.

It’s almost as if Meadows is a whole new golf course.

“We definitely consider the opportunity to partner with the PGA and host this National Championship for a fourth time a true honor,” said Josh Willis, Sunriver Resort’s director of golf operations. “We have put a lot of work into Meadows to ensure that it remains a worthy complement to Crosswater. We’re confident that the Crosswater and Meadows golf courses will provide a challenging test for our country’s best PGA Professionals.”

Crosswater and Meadows have become accustomed over the years to hosting elite-level championship golf.

Not only has Sunriver hosted the PGA Professional Championship, Crosswater hosted the PGA Champions Tour’s Jeld-Wen Tradition each year from 2007 through 2010.The resort was also home to the 2005 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships (Meadows), 2006 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships (Crosswater), and the 2007 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship (Crosswater), among many other high-caliber golf tournaments.

Even with that championship pedigree, we consider our time with the PGA of America special.

“Because of the great product we have in our course and our facilities that we have, and having hosted this event for years, we're a very attractive resort for the PGA,” Willis said. “We've built a great relationship with them. We're fortunate, they want to continue to come back.”

It probably doesn’t hurt that every year the PGA visits, the pros put on quite a show. Relive the action from the 2013 PPC, including the incredible Rob Labritz's shot to qualify for the 2013 PGA Championship. Follow this year’s action at pga.com/professionalchampionship.

Two years in the making, and it should be another fantastic week at Sunriver Resort. Spectators are welcome and admission is free.
