Golf Digest, a preeminent voice in the golfing world, has unveiled its discerning 2023-2024 list of 'America's 100 Greatest Public Courses', and Sunriver Resort is honored to announce that its Crosswater golf course has landed at an impressive 52nd spot, up from no. 61 last year. The editors describe the list as “meant to be both a marker of exemplary golf design and a guide to where you might want to play, either soon or on a special occasion trip.”
Crosswater, a heathland-style course sprawling over 600 acres of breathtakingly scenic woodlands and meticulously preserved wetlands, is an Oregon gem. Woven together by the gentle flow of the Deschutes and Little Deschutes Rivers, the course features five tee placements for each hole and bent grass fairways and greens. Depending on your tee selection, the rivers can even factor into play up to seven times in a single round.
When highlighting Crosswater, Golf Digest declared: “Part of Crosswater was reportedly built in the meadow where John Wayne, as Rooster Cogburn, filmed his climactic charge with guns blazing in the 1969 film, True Grit. The Bob Cupp design is far more subtle than a Wayne western, with low-profile greens edged by graceful chipping areas and fairways intersected repeatedly by the Big and Little Deschutes rivers. Crosswater was Golf Digest's Best New Resort Course of 1995.”
Crosswater, a private golf course reserved for Club Members and Resort Guests only, recently reopened after completing comprehensive upgrades to its bunkers. This work was part of a million-plus dollar investment Sunriver Resort made to its courses, including the new Meadows bunkers in 2016 and Caldera Links in 2023. Unlike the reimagination of the bunkers in 2016, the Crosswater bunkers were not changed, as it was important to keep the integrity of the existing design, and were curated and groomed with precision, including new sand, grass, and more — all leading to better play and performance for our player and the life expectancy of the course.
